   In Polynesian and Indonesian myth the great mother of gods and men who lived in Avaiki, the land of the dead; the mother of Vatea, who rules over the underworld, and grandmother of Tangaroa, the sky god, and Rongo, in the Mangaia Island Creation Legend.
